In a compelling conversation hosted at Art Basel Miami Beach, artist Sam Spratt, collector Benny Gross, and moderator Tara Harris, Head of Nifty Gateway Studio, explored the evolving intersection of digital art, blockchain technology, and human connection. Moving beyond the surface-level headlines of NFTs and crypto speculation, the discussion dug into the deeper implications of digital ownership, community engagement, and the emotional resonance of art in the digital age.
For many, the blockchain is synonymous with financial speculation. But for artists like Sam Spratt, it’s become a powerful tool for creative freedom and community building. Spratt, who transitioned from commercial illustration to blockchain-based art, shared how crypto transactions—traditionally viewed as cold, clinical data—began to reveal deeply human narratives.
“Each transaction, each wallet, each timestamp,” he noted, “is not just a sale—it’s a record of a relationship.” This realization led Spratt to gift unique paintings to early supporters of his digital art, seeing them not just as collectors, but as co-creators of a shared story.

This digital canvas became a repository of humanity, capturing everything from confessions to jokes and acts of vandalism—all of which remain preserved forever on-chain.
“In a traditional gallery,” he said, “what you feel often disappears after you leave. But here, every interaction is encoded, preserved, and part of the work itself.”

For Gross, collecting Sam Spratt’s work was never about prestige or exclusivity, but about finding meaning and building a lifelong relationship with the artist.
